We’ve all been there, your rope is old and starting to fray, lets face it – its seen better days. BUT it feels like a waste to throw it away – especially after all the good times you’ve had together! We’ve got you covered – Here’s one way to re-use old climbing rope!
For this idea, all you need is a bucket, a rope, a hot glue gun and a plant ready and waiting for a new home!
First, find a bucket you think would be a good size for your plant, this can be the one it came in or one you may have around the house. (If you choose the plant pot that your plant is currently living in, it would be a good idea to temporarily remove the plant). Once you have your plant pot, turn it up side down so that the base of the pot is facing upwards.
Then you’ll need to get your rope and hot glue gun, starting in the centre of the base of the plant pot you’ll want to begin spiraling the rope around itself to create the base of the basket, (it should begin to resemble a similar pattern to a snail shell). Its useful to wrap the rope slowly and secure with glue every few centimeters to ensure it doesn’t uncoil itself. This is the important decision making moment, you can either glue the rope to the bucket as well as itself or you can glue only the rope, by not gluing the rope to the bucket, you should be able to remove the bucket afterwards if you’re wanting to make a hanger for something else less messy or indoors.
Once you have done the bottom of the plant pot, continue with the same technique down the sides until the whole pot is covered, remember to glue regularly to keep the structure strong.
When you run out of wrapping space decide how much rope you think you will need to finish the pot, cut the rope accordingly and glue the end into the last of the space, ensure you use a lot of glue at this point as you don’t want the end to come loose. Give plenty of time for the glue to dry, then you can either remove the pot you used for size, leave it in, or realize the glue got everywhere and leave it in regardless!
Now you have the option of leaving how it is, putting your plant into its cool new home and moving on with your day, or you can use what’s left of your old rope to fabricate a hanging mechanism and create a hanging basket so your plants look hardcore.
Whichever you decide, we hope you have a lot of fun making these!
