The small print

Code of conduct

Short version: look after each other, look where you are falling, and do not be the reason somebody stops coming.

On the mats

Bouldering is safe until two people stop paying attention at once. So:

  • Look up before you walk under a wall, and do not sit or stand in a landing zone.
  • Do not climb directly above or below somebody else.
  • Down-climb where you can. Jumping off from the top all day is how ankles go.
  • Brush holds, and put the brush back.
  • Bags, shoes, coats and children stay off the matting.
  • If somebody looks like they are about to land on you, say so. Nobody minds being shouted at for that.

With each other

This is a community wall and everybody in it paid the same to be here, whatever they climb.

  • Unsolicited beta is not coaching. Ask first.
  • Do not hog a problem. If somebody is queuing, take turns.
  • Nobody is here to be looked at. Do not film other people without asking.
  • Racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, sexism and harassment of any kind get you removed from the building. There is no version of this we will argue about.

The dull but important bit

  • Everybody who climbs signs the conditions of use before their first session.
  • Under 14s must have a responsible adult watching them. 14 to 17 year olds need signing off before climbing on their own.
  • Do not climb under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Tell the desk about an injury, however small. It matters more than you think.
  • No outside food or drink on the matting. That is what the café is for.

When somebody does not

Most of the time a quiet word from a duty manager is the end of it. Where it is not, we will ask somebody to leave for the day, and in serious cases we will cancel a membership or ban somebody from the centre.

That decision sits with the general manager. If you think we have got it wrong, write to team@bouldershack.co.uk and it will be looked at again by somebody who was not involved.

[CONFIRM: whether there is a formal written appeals process and a timescale to publish here.]

If something happens to you here

Tell any member of staff, or email team@bouldershack.co.uk. You will be taken seriously, you will not have to justify yourself, and you decide what happens next as far as we are able to let you.
