We’ve got some important news to share, and it’s something that’s been a long time coming.
From 1 November 2025, Boulder Shack Climbing Gym is officially a not-for-profit company.

If you’ve been part of the Shack for a while, this won’t come as a surprise. In truth, we’ve always run this way. Every penny that’s come through the door has gone straight back into improving the centre, supporting our team, and building the community that makes Boulder Shack what it is. Now, we’re simply making that commitment official.

A natural next step

Boulder Shack was founded by Tim Miller, who’s also behind two community-focused organisations in climbing, Community Climbs CIC and the Independent Climbing Wall Collective (ICWC) CIC.

Tim’s long experience in running socially minded, community-driven projects made this an easy decision.

Tim says, “For us, it’s always been about creating something lasting a place that evolves, inspires and gives back. Becoming a not-for-profit isn’t a change in direction; it’s a commitment to keep investing in the people and the community that make Boulder Shack what it is.”

What this means

Being not-for-profit doesn’t change your day at the wall, prices, sessions and memberships all stay the same.
What it does mean is that 100 % of our income continues to go back into Boulder Shack:

  • Maintaining and improving our facilities
  • Investing in staff and coaching
  • Expanding inclusive and youth programmes
  • Strengthening the community that’s grown around the wall

In short, it gives us more stability and flexibility to do what we do best, offer great climbing and a welcoming space for everyone.

Independent and proud

Boulder Shack has always been an independent wall, built by climbers for climbers. Becoming a not-for-profit underlines that independence and our long-term commitment to Southampton’s climbing community.

We’re here to stay, to grow, and to keep reinvesting in the place and the people that make Boulder Shack special.

How you can help

The best way to support us is the same as it’s always been: keep climbing.
Come down, bring your friends, introduce someone new to climbing, and keep this community thriving.

From everyone here, thank you for being part of Boulder Shack’s story so far.
Here’s to the next chapter: stronger, community-first, and proudly not-for-profit.
