Why they love it

Is your little one a big bundle of energy?

  • Play first, climbing second

Fast, layered games that stretch every child whatever their age, attention span or confidence. Nobody has to join in with everything.

  • You are part of it

You are their spotter, right behind them the whole time. It is good exercise for both of you, even when it feels like just having fun.

  • An instructor in the room

One of our instructors runs the whole session and is always there if you want a hand or an idea.

What happens

A session, start to finish.

  1. Book ahead

Sessions fill up quickly, so it is worth booking early. You will both need a waiver, which takes two minutes online.

  2. Come dressed to move

Comfy clothes for both of you. Close fitting trainers are best for little feet, and climbing shoes are free to borrow if they want to try them.

  3. Climb, play, repeat

The instructor leads the games and you spot your child: stand behind them with your arms out, ready to steady them.

  4. Café afterwards

Get to know the other parents and carers over a coffee and something to eat.

Brothers and sisters

Siblings are welcome.

You can bring two children to take part or to watch. If both are climbing they take turns on the wall, because you can only spot one child at a time.

Babies and children under 2 are welcome to come along too. They just need to stay clear of the areas where climbers might come down.

  • Not sure it will work for you? Try one session and see. Every child is different, and the instructor is there to help.

Worth knowing

  • A parent or carer stays with their child for the whole session.
  • Younger tots, especially under two and a half, will need more hands on help with where their feet and hands go.
  • Outside Tots sessions the youngest age for climbing is 4, and children aged 4 and 5 need one adult each.

FAQs

Questions people ask.

Anything else, ring us on 02380 171 808.

  • What should I wear?

Anything you can move in. Leggings, shorts, a t-shirt, whatever is comfortable. Climbing shoes are £3.50 to hire, free with any membership, and we have them in every size, so you do not need your own.

  • Can children come?

Yes. Climbing Tots is for 2 to 5 year olds, 4 to 13 year olds climb supervised by an adult, and 14 to 17 year olds can be signed off to climb on their own. There is a junior club too if they catch the bug.

  • How young can they start?

Climbing Tots takes 2 to 5 year olds, with a grown up alongside them the whole session. From 4, children can climb any time we are open as long as a responsible adult is supervising them.

  • Do I have to climb too?

No, but you do have to be there and watching. You do not need any experience yourself. One adult supervises up to [number of children, to confirm], and there is a short briefing the first time.

  • When can my teenager climb without me?

From 14, once they have been signed off. They climb with a coach who checks they know the rules and can look after themselves, and after that they can come on their own.

  • What is the difference between the clubs?

Junior Climbing Club is the weekly coached club, 5 to 7, 8 to 12 and 13 to 17 groups, £13 a session for the younger two and £16 for the oldest. Junior Academy is for young climbers who want to compete, by invitation, £16 a session.
