Schools, scouts, guides and youth groups

A session your group will ask to do again.

Climbing builds confidence, teamwork and communication without anybody noticing they are learning. Our instructors run the session, and you get to watch it happen.

Why climbing

What they take home with them.

  • Confidence

Everybody gets to the top of something. For some of them it is the first sport that has ever clicked.

  • Teamwork and listening

Working out a climb together, and cheering each other up it, does more than any ice breaker.

  • A calm head

Climbing takes all of your attention, which makes it a very good way to leave a stressful week behind.

Three ways to do it

Whatever suits your group.

  • Most popular

    We run it

Our qualified, experienced instructors run the whole session, pitched at your group’s age and ability.

    • One instructor for every nine climbers or fewer.
    • Priced by group size, session length and how often you come.
  • You bring an instructor

Groups with their own qualified instructor are welcome. Each climber pays normal entry and your instructors come in free.

    • We ask to see the instructor’s Mountain Training qualification, first aid certificate and insurance.
  • We come to you

Our instructors can run sessions at other walls too, if that works better for your group.

NICAS, the National Indoor Climbing Award Schemes

For PE departments

GCSE PE, with a national certificate on top.

We are a provider of the NICAS schemes, the National Indoor Climbing Award Schemes, all the way to Level 5, so you can do the full NICAS programme with us. We are very experienced at linking it in with GCSE PE: students work through NICAS as they go, so they finish with a nationally recognised certificate as well as their grade.

Rock climbing can be a student’s individual sport for GCSE PE, and we have helped school groups complete theirs here. Sessions can be tailored to your department, with AQA and Edexcel both supported.

A block is usually ten weekly sessions, at any time of day. After school and the last period of the day are the most popular.

  • Not doing GCSE? Youth groups can follow NICAS too, for something to work towards and a certificate to take home.

How it works

Simple to arrange.

  1. Tell us about your group

How many, how old, and what you would like them to get from it. Ring us or send a message.

  2. We send a quote

With times that work. Group sessions are not usually at our busiest times, so the wall is yours.

  3. Sort the paperwork

Each climber needs a consent form from a parent or guardian. Schools can sign a single declaration instead.

  4. Bring them down

We provide the instructors and the shoes. You bring the group.

FAQs

Questions people ask.

Anything else, ring us on 02380 171 808.

  • What should I wear?

Anything you can move in. Leggings, shorts, a t-shirt, whatever is comfortable. Climbing shoes are £3.50 to hire, free with any membership, and we have them in every size, so you do not need your own.

  • Can children come?

Yes. Climbing Tots is for 2 to 5 year olds, 4 to 13 year olds climb supervised by an adult, and 14 to 17 year olds can be signed off to climb on their own. There is a junior club too if they catch the bug.

  • How young can they start?

Climbing Tots takes 2 to 5 year olds, with a grown up alongside them the whole session. From 4, children can climb any time we are open as long as a responsible adult is supervising them.

  • Do I have to climb too?

No, but you do have to be there and watching. You do not need any experience yourself. One adult supervises up to [number of children, to confirm], and there is a short briefing the first time.

  • When can my teenager climb without me?

From 14, once they have been signed off. They climb with a coach who checks they know the rules and can look after themselves, and after that they can come on their own.

  • What is the difference between the clubs?

Junior Climbing Club is the weekly coached club, 5 to 7, 8 to 12 and 13 to 17 groups, £13 a session for the younger two and £16 for the oldest. Junior Academy is for young climbers who want to compete, by invitation, £16 a session.
